Collin County will be the next county in Texas to turn blue. While some analysts predict it will be in 2024 or 2026, I think Collin County can flip in 2022. Not only will Beto’s win ultimately impact every down-ballot candidate, but there are also multiple Democrats running in Collin County who we should all be excited about it. Kevin Morris is one of them.
One of the biggest pain points in Collin County is property taxes.
Obviously, there are more problems than just property taxes, but of all counties in North Texas, Collin County has the quickest skyrocketing property taxes. To homeowners, that’s a big deal. To understand how to fix property taxes, you first have to understand why they are so skyrocketing.
Candidate for Lt. Governor Mike Collier has put out a lot of information about this. Look it up if you ever get the chance. In a nutshell, Republicans at the state level keep promising to cut taxes by cutting education. So, what happens is counties are forced to pick up the monies that the state cuts for public education to be funded. So, every time it’s cut from the state, it goes up locally, and the only way counties can raise that money is by raising property taxes.
Kevin Morris promised to properly fund public education at the state level, drastically lowering everyone’s property taxes.
Where is that money going to come from? There are many ways Democrats plan on funding public education (we can talk about all of those ways another time), but the legalization of cannabis is one of them. Kevin Morris supports ending the prohibition on marijuana.
One of our favorite things about Kevin Morris is that he’s taking the climate crisis seriously and has pledged not to take money from big oil. Considering the doomsday clock is only seconds from midnight now, we should all be hyper-focused on saving our planet. But unfortunately, the GOP has had big oil in their pockets for so long that the climate crisis is now a climate emergency. Kevin Morris wants Texas to lead in sustainability and embrace alternative forms of energy.
Kevin Morris has promised to expand access to healthcare for all Texans.
Texas has the highest rate of uninsured people in the country. Unfortunately, the Texas Government did not accept federal funds to expand Medicaid, which is detrimental to our state’s people. We must prioritize increasing access to health care to avoid skyrocketing costs. This has been something that Kevin Morris is behind and plans to do once elected.
He also believes in a woman’s right to choose. Kevin Morris wants to repeal the awful legislation SB8 and ensure all Texas women have access to the reproductive freedom they choose.
Protecting voting rights.
To protect our Democracy, we must ensure that our elections are accessible to all. Unfortunately, the Texas GOP has passed more restrictive voting restrictions laws this past decade to stay in power and deny people their votes. Kevin Morris has promised to work on expanding voting rights and fighting the voter suppression laws being enacted in Texas.
For all these reasons and more, Living Blue in Texas endorses Kevin Morris for HD67.
