The Burnet County Democratic Club will host Sierra Club Activist Annie Hartnett at this month’s membership meeting. The hybrid (Zoom and/or in-person) meeting will take place on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at 11:30 am. Participants can attend remotely via Zoom or meet Hartnett in person at the Burnet County Democratic Club, 218 Main St., Marble Falls, Texas.
“Annie is our first in-person speaker in more than a year,” said BJ Henry, BCDCTX president. “She’s well-informed on the border issue.”
Hartnett, a writer, activist and Sierra Club volunteer, has been visiting the US-Mexico borderlands since the 1990s and witnessed the effects of US policies on border security and immigration. She wrote a resolution against the border wall and in favor of comprehensive immigration reform that was adopted by the City of Austin and has published essays and op-eds in Salon, Austin American Statesman and Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine, among others.
“Annie is a dear friend of mine who knows the truth about what happens at the border,” said Mary Thompson, BCDCTX vice president. “She’ll share some great photos from her trips and report on the real conditions on the ground as well as the impact of the border wall on the environment and community. Given all the headlines recently about how our governor wants to spend our money, these facts will be timely.”
Newsletter subscribers will receive detailed information about how to attend the meeting remotely or in person. Anyone who supports Democratic ideals or wants to hear about them is welcome to attend; request information by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
