Texas State Democratic Executive Committee Calls on 22 Texas Republicans to Resign

Texas Democratic Party’s State Democratic Executive Committee Calls on 22 Texas Republicans to Resign for Attempting to Overthrow the Will of the People and Inciting the Violence We Saw at the US Capitol.

Austin, Texas — Today, in an emergency meeting of the Texas Democratic Party’s State Democratic Executive Committee (SDEC), the committee passed two resolutions calling for the resignations of 22 Texas Republicans who echoed Trump’s dangerous rhetoric and aided and abetted his attempts to overthrow the will of the people while inciting the violence we saw at the Capitol that killed a police officer injured thousands, and terrorized the country.

Texas Republicans have known for months that Joe Biden won the Presidential election, yet, they have openly incited violence and attempted to overthrow the will of the people for their own political gain.

The first resolution called on Ted Cruz to resign for inciting domestic terrorism and leading the charge to overthrow the will of the people by objecting to the electors of states that Donald Trump did not win. If Cruz fails to resign, the State Democratic Executive Committee calls on the Senate to expel him.

The State Democratic Executive Committee echoes the Texas Democratic Party, which called on Cruz to resign the day of the attack.

The second resolution called on Indicted Ken Paxton, 16 Republican members of Congress, Angela Paxton, Kyle Biedermann, and Briscoe Cain to resign because of the role they played to incite domestic terrorists and the subsequent violence and harm that their words and actions caused.

Indicted Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton led a bogus, pandering lawsuit to overturn the will of the people that was unanimously rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court, then incited a terrorist rally before the siege at the Capitol. Sixteen Republican members of Congress saw the violence firsthand and still decided to vote to reject the electors despite Biden’s commanding victory. Angela Paxton, Kyle Biedermann, and Briscoe Cain all were in Washington, cheering, aiding and abetting them all along the way.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“These 22 Texas Republicans all played a role in Republican attempts to overturn the will of the people by participating in the rally or the violence that we saw at the Capitol. Their actions are traitorous to our country and harmful to our democracy. They should all resign or be expelled from their positions immediately.

“This is beyond politics of the day, this is about the foundations of our very democracy. If we allow these traitors to go back to work and act like everything is normal, we will never get past what happened on January 6th. Ted Cruz and Ken Paxton knew quite plainly that Joe Biden won the election and still pulled a political stunt to attempt to overthrow the will of the people just to rev up their rabid right-wing base.

“Before we can truly move forward as a country and heal, people must be held responsible for their actions. I commend the State Democratic Executive Committee for their willingness to hold these traitors accountable. This isn’t a Democratic issue or a Republican issue, this is about the foundations on which our democracy stands. Patriots have fought, bled, and died to defend our democracy. Ted Cruz, Ken Paxton, 16 Republican members of Congress, and 3 Republican state legislators spat in the face of these patriots and put our entire democracy at risk. They must be held accountable.”
