LEWISVILLE, TEXAS — Delia Parker-Mims is proud to announce that Rodney Ellis, Harris County Precinct 1 Commissioner (D), has endorsed Democrat Parker-Mims in her bid for Denton County Commissioner Precinct 3. Ellis will join Parker-Mims for a conversation and fundraiser whose theme will be “When Democrats Get a Seat at the Table, Everybody Wins” on August 21, 2020, at 6:00 p.m. on Facebook Live.

Ellis, who assumed his current office Jan. 1, 2017, is an attorney who previously served as a Texas state senator for 25 years and as a three-term Houston city councilman and is seeking re-election.

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of Commissioner Ellis as I’ve long admired the powerful, thoughtful initiatives he forms with the community in mind,” said Parker-Mims. “Commissioner Ellis doesn’t just introduce initiatives, he actively pursues their passage, frequently via innovative approaches.”

Though Commissioner Ellis has sponsored improvements such as bike trails, bridges and pedestrian paths, he is best known for spearheading reform of Harris County’s bail system. Ellis wanted the bail system changed because he said it kept financially disadvantaged citizens charged with misdemeanors behind bars until their court dates, while wealthy ones could afford bail and walk free. Ellis said, “Harris County’s bail system is unconstitutionally discriminatory and morally indefensible. It’s time for us to fix a broken justice system that favors the privileged and punishes the poor for being poor.”

Ellis’ activism created a bail system that enables poor citizens accused of misdemeanors to receive no-cash bonds, allowing them to resume their daily lives before their court dates.

Like Ellis, Parker-Mims would take office in a governing body long dominated by Republicans, including her opponent Bobbie Mitchell, who are intent upon protecting the status quo in a county that is quickly becoming more diverse and Democratic.

“We need initiatives that will promote better lives for all Denton County residents,” said Parker-Mims. “When everyone has a seat at the table, everyone benefits.”

Parker-Mims stated that as Denton County Commissioner 3 she would serve the community by championing improved access to health care, affordable housing for seniors, a BEE S.A.A.F.E. (Safety Against Attacks for Everyone) program to prevent sex trafficking, easier voting through voting centers, protection of the environment and reduced gun violence.

Delia Parker-Mims, a longtime Lewisville family attorney, is a candidate for Denton County Commissioner 3 who will deliver smart, responsive leadership to make Denton County safer and healthier for families. Learn more about Delia at www.votedelia.org.
